As the regular season ends on a crazy year for college football, it’s time to look at who deserves to be honored as the best player in the nation. It comes down to two players right now: Ashton Jeanty, RB from Boise State and Travis Hunter, WR/DB from Colorado. While both finalists are exceptional players, only one can be named as the Heisman winner for 2024.
We at Sports Daily Media do not have a vote, but if we did, it would be cast for Ashton Jeanty. The running back is on pace for one of the greatest seasons we’ve ever seen for the position in college football. His season totals stand at a staggering 2,497 rushing yards and 29 TDs on 7.3 yards per carry. To put this into perspective, Derrick Henry’s Heisman campaign in 2015 saw him put up 2,219 rushing yards and 28 TDs on 5.6 yards per carry. The craziest part is: Jeanty’s season isn’t over yet. He led the Broncos to the 3 seed and a first-round bye in this year’s CFB playoff. Boise State will face the winner of the matchup between Penn State and SMU. But while he prepares for the playoffs, there is something else in sight for Jeanty: the single season rushing record set by Barry Sanders in 1988. The legendary running back from Oklahoma State’s record of 2,628 rushing yards has stood for 36 years, but is on the verge of being broken. Jeanty needs just 131 yards on the ground to make history, and considering he puts up 192 rushing yards per game, I think we will have a new record holder.
Ashton Jeanty’s historic numbers and ability to lead his team to the playoffs should earn him the 2024 Heisman trophy. As it stands however, cardio king, Instagram legend, and media darling Travis Hunter is the current betting favorite to win the award. Hopefully the voters actually take a look at the two’s resume’s and vote accordingly.
